There is a fulfillment that we all long for.
I feel its absence when I can't sleep at night for fear of experiencing acts of violent crime. I notice its lack when I feel alone or misunderstood or like I don't belong. I can see it in the things unsaid, in conflict or pain or trauma unresolved.
Oh, how long?
How much longer must we wait for the promised morning? How much longer must we bear the weight of suffering?
And yet, as C.S. Lewis points out, the very longing for this fulfillment gives us hope—hope that we were made for it, and that it is only a matter of time.
This painting, Weep No More, is the conclusion of the Come to the Table collection. It is the full communion that we all desire. It is what we are all aiming toward with each decision that we make. It is the expression of shalom that Neal Plantinga defines as, "the webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and delight."
I want to highlight here the song that inspired the title for this piece, "We Will Feast in the House of Zion" by Sandra McCracken.
In my own life, I have certainly felt the refining heat of challenging experiences in the past year, yet I have not been burned. I have felt the water rising around me, yet I have not drowned. And it is only this vision of full satisfaction that has sustained me through it all.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
Psalm 36:7-9
